In the early Christian centuries many began to pervert the gospel as people begin to introduce new phases of doctrine, more pleasing to many minds, and not in harmony with the fundamental principles of the gospel. Heretics such as Marcion, the Judaizers, the Nicolaitans, gnosticism, docitism, and all those “isms” began to creep into the church and pervert the gospel. Therefore, Paul, in the first chapter of Galatians, addressed that issue very explicitly. “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-9). Notice, that when people remove themselves from the gospel, they, of necessity, remove themselves from Him who called them; that is the Lord Jesus Christ. One cannot accept any other gospel without being removed from Jesus. As can be seen, the gospel was already being perverted at the time of Paul and his great concern was that the people were being removed from the pure gospel to another gospel and thus removing themselves from their only hope of salvation.
